We had the honor of sitting with Clifford Walker and hearing his story. His connection to the land and his quiet strength remind us why rebuilding agriculture matters.

Clifford is 80 years old and has spent his entire life farming in St. James Parish. His land was passed down through generations and filled with fruit trees and crops that took decades to grow.

Then Hurricane Melissa struck.

The Category 5 storm destroyed much of his farmland. Trees were uprooted. Crops were lost. Years of work were washed away.

For Clifford, the storm did not just damage crops.
It erased a lifetime of labor.

A legacy at risk

Fruit Forest Agricultural Internship Jamaica

Before the hurricane, Clifford reported that you would not be able to see the homes on the other side due to the abundance of crops.

Clifford’s farm once provided:

  • food for his family

  • income for his household

  • knowledge for younger farmers

Now, at 80 years old, he is no longer physically able to clear the land and replant on his own.

“I want the land to live again,” he told us.

Why Clifford’s story matters

Fruit Forest International Internships Jamaica

Clifford represents many elder farmers across Jamaica who lost their livelihoods after Hurricane Melissa. Without support, their land and agricultural knowledge may be lost forever.

Fields of Joy: Restoring the land

Through Fields of Joy, Rebuild Joy is working to:

  • replant fruit trees

  • restore the soil

  • create a sustainable food forest

  • build a learning space for youth and future farmers

This land can become a place where local and international partners help train the next generation of agriculturalists.

Seeking partners

We are inviting:

  • agricultural organizations

  • universities

  • sustainability groups

  • international volunteers

to help restore Clifford’s land into a living classroom for food security and education.
