Founded in honor of Juliet Joy Walker, a beloved community leader remembered for generosity, strength, and laughter, this initiative carries forward her legacy of helping others. Joy was known for caring for elders, sharing what she had, and welcoming anyone to her table.
Rebuild Joy is our promise to continue that work.
Rebuilding and repairing safe, resilient housing for elders
Restoring farmland, fruit trees, and community agriculture
Listening to elders’ experiences and ensuring they are seen and supported

Rebuild Joy is a community-led initiative dedicated to helping elderly residents in rural St. James Parish, Jamaica rebuild their lives after Hurricane Melissa. The storm devastated mountain communities such as Spring Mount, John’s Hall, and Lottery; destroying homes, farms, and the basic security elders relied on after a lifetime of hard work and service.
Many elders lost more than structures.
They lost independence, safety, and the places where memories were made and families were raised. In rural areas, far from major aid distribution centers, support has been slow to arrive. Elders are now navigating displacement, health challenges, and grief, often alone.
Rebuild Joy exists so they don’t have to.
From devastation to rebuilding, one story at a time.

Stand with our elders. Help rebuild their lives.
